When we begin planning your family's photo session, one of the very first steps is to begin outfit planning. I always start with mom first, so I'm going to give you some insight to the process of making mom look and feel her best! From almost a decade of experience photographing families + my own personal experiences of having my family photographed, I can tell you this with absolute assurance: if mom doesn't like how she looks in the photos, in general, she won't like the photos. As your Franklin, TN Family and Newborn Photographer, my goal isn't for you to like your photos. I want you to LOVE your photos! I want you to be excited to display them, share them online, and lovingly pass them onto to your future generations. So, I take the guesswork out of it. Momma: I'll help you find the perfect dress (some are even available to borrow from my own client closet).

Fit

This is the most important factor to consider when choosing a dress. Maxi or midi length ALWAYS is what I recommend. Stay away from overly fitted or tight dresses. Fitted in the bust and waist, yes! But flowy everywhere else. Not only is this a universally flattering fit, it also gives beautiful motion in photos.

Sleeves

You want sleeves! Spaghetti straps and tank style dresses often expose one of our more vulnerable areas and very few moms that I know actually like how that area photographs. In a family session, there will be lots of movement and playing and twirling. You'll feel so much more confident to have the upper and under arm concealed. So if you choose a sleeveless dress, I recommend a sweater or cardigan to go over it ( I looove layers too!)

Color/Pattern/Texture

If you've landed on my blog, I hope you've browsed some of my site as well. It might go without saying, but I love whites, neutrals, and pastels. I love rich textures and soft materials. These all come together so nicely and work best with the film-inspired tones I use when editing. If you like a pattern, make sure it isn't overly busy (like zig zag lines or abstract shapes). Stick with soft florals or other subtle patterns.

Sound overwhelming? Don't worry! I'll work one on one with you to find the perfect dress. The above suggestions are all guidelines I follow when choosing dresses for my own wardrobe.
